America Bashing, Alive and Well

At Coming Anarchy, Younghusband dispels the idea that Canada is on the slide to becoming another bastion of anti-American sentiments. It's hard to say whether US relations will be a key factor in voter choice on January 23, but the Liberals have introduced new (negative) ads (via Peaktalk), some of which are quite obvious in their purpose in setting up an antagonistic dichotomy of the Liberals versus Harper the US neocon pansy.

Who paid for Stephen Harper's rise to the head of the party?
We don't know.
He refuses to reveal his donors.
What do you suppose he's hiding?
We do know he's very popular with right wingers in the U.S.
They have money. Maybe they helped?
We just don't know. He just won't say.”
From the Washington Times, Dec. 2, 2005:
“Canada may elect the most pro-American leader in the western world.
“Harper is pro-Iraq war, anti-Kyoto and socially conservative.
Bush's new best friend is the poster boy for his ideal foreign leader.
A Harper victory would put a smile on George W. Bush's face.”
Well, at least someone will be happy, eh?

Will the ads or the points they put up help the Liberals? Bets are off at this point. But should Americans think hard about their northern neighbours if the Liberals manage to erase a ten-point deficit in the polls after these ads air? Did Ambassador David Wilkins, no matter how diplomatically uncouth, have a point when he said that continued anti-American statements in the election campaign will have effects on cross-border relations? I think the ambassador is onto something.

Note: none of this is new to Canadian audiences, but I think the international readers of Coming Anarchy would benefit from additional perspectives from the Great White North
