Average People Are Beautiful

No, not “average” as in everyday, but as in mathematically average, the melding of facial characteristics towards the mean (via Bastardly). The face on the left is composed from faces from Hong Kong, and the one on the right is composed from faces from Sydney.

Hong Kong female composite. Sydney female supercomposite (two locations).

While the results may seem somewhat unintuitive (average equals beautiful?), I believe that it is not so surprising from an evolutionary perspective. Someone with an “average” appearance would presumably carry a healthy mix of various genes, and are unlikely to carry any isolated unfit traits.

And on the subject of beauty, The Beijing News declares what it calls the “50 Most Beautiful People in China.” (via Simon) Maybe it's my Western-corrupted tastes, but some of their ordering is pretty horrendous. At least no F4 though.
