Rumours about Emerson
NB: this entire post is based on the rumour mill, and nothing more. To be fair to Mr. Emerson, none of these points here have been actually proven in public. But the allegations, if true, certainly diminish my view of him.
Previously, I had wondered what Kanman Wong thought about running for the Tories against David Emerson. Apparently, he had already gotten it out of his system, 'cuz he knew that Emerson might come over:
"That was my plan. I heard lots of rumours that Mr. Emerson wasn't happy with the Liberal party long before the election," Wong said in an interview yesterday. "If one day Mr. Emerson prepared to cross the floor I was ready to step aside for him."
And as for the rumours that Emerson delayed a possible softwood lumber deal with the United States, I would believe that he did it to help the Tories only if:
Emerson believes that he can sabotage a national campaign without hurting his local one.
Emerson was betting his political future with the Tories when their prospects were still in the drink.
The Tories are going to look good with a deal that amounts to pretty much capitulation (Have you actually read this thing?).
Do I think that Paul Martin (correctly) saw the deal as possibly detrimental to his BC prospects? I think it's likely (although I personally do believe that the Canadian position on the softwood lumber issue is economically unsound). But regardless of the motivation of not announcing the deal, David Emerson appears to be someone who supported hiding part of Liberal policy from the public (I believe the term is “hidden agenda”), who had doubts about his own party, and yet still ran for them anyways. Just as I was glad to see Belinda leave the Tories, I'm not particularly pleased that someone with those sorts of credentials joining the Tory ranks.
